Tell Harper to allow trans people to fly on airplanes

Goal : 7250 / 10000

Under Sec 5.2(1)(c) of the ID screening regs of Aeronautics Act:

“An air carrier shall not transport a passenger if the passenger does not appear to be of the gender indicated on the identification he or she presents.”

This means that anyone who is a post-op or non-op trans* person can be turned away from getting on flights in Canada. This is blatant discrimination towards the trans*community.

Sign Below and tell Harper that Canadians won't stand for this type of oppression.

This is not ok and we need to make sure this standard is never acceptable.

consider it signed. Harper clearly is an ignorant robot that is incapable of feelings... i tried to see his point of view a few years back... but he's definitely not winning me over as a voting canadian.

If you want to look at it that way anyone that looks older or younger then their stated Birthday is in the same boat... Short hair vs long hair... Dying your hair... growing a beard... gained weight... Lost weight... Botox... Eyelash plucking... Facial piercings... Acne... Scarring from an accident (Although you should have medical papers for this). In 2008-09 - There was an Amendment to the Identity Screening Act. http://www.gazette.gc.ca/rp-pr/p2/2008/2008-09-17/html/sor-dors250-eng.html (2) Remove the requirement for air carriers to verify name, gender and date of birth at the boarding gate, and require that carriers verify name only with one government-issued photo identification document or two non-photo government-issued identification documents. So headline seems nothing but sensationalism... Below is the ID Screening section several articles are linking to... Notice the date is 2007, The year before the amendment was written. http://laws.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/SOR-2007-82/FullText.html 5.2 (1) An air carrier shall not transport a passenger if. (a) the passenger presents a piece of photo identification and does not resemble the photograph;. (b) the passenger does not appear to be the age indicated by the date of birth on the identification he or she presents;. (c) the passenger does not appear to be of the gender indicated on the identification he or she presents; or. (d) the passenger presents more than one form of identification and there is a major discrepancy between those forms of identification. (2) Despite paragraph (1)(a), an air carrier may transport a passenger who presents a piece of photo identification but does not resemble the photograph if. (a) the passenger’s appearance changed for medical reasons after the photograph was taken and the passenger presents the air carrier with a document signed by a health care professional and attesting to that fact; or. (b) the passengers’s face is bandaged for medical reasons and the passenger presents the air carrier with a document signed by a health care professional and attesting to that fact. Of course I am not a professional in Aeronautic regulations... I could be full of it.

I would suggest maybe starting a change.org petition, it may reach a broader audience!

As an American Trans man who has regularly flow into / out of Canadian hubs this Horrifies me! I have always felt safer when in Canada than in the states. I would expect this type of regulation to come from a Bush type of Administration. NOT our friendly neighbors to the North where SRS is covered.

I'm curious to know who will be deciding what gender looks like.

SIGNED... #2789 of 5000. for me... I have an added complication: not just (c), BUT (b) too. for (b), below, as, I have been stopped MOST of my life for looking 'too young', and both my spouse as well as my children have faced needing vouching for me that: (b) the passenger does not appear to be the age indicated by the date of birth on the identification he or she presents;. My Wife: I am in fact her 'spouse' and not 'child'. My Children: I am in fact their 'parent' and not 'sibling'. Believe it or not, CUSTOMS also does this to me in my BIRTH NATION, CANADA, when I come back home. (and this happens all even BEFORE my 'transition' (in the last 2 to 3 decades... up to very recently)). Youthfulness may be a BLESSING, but the world sure makes it a CURSE... (c) the passenger does not appear to be of the gender indicated on the identification he or she presents;. Well now... I am going to be even more a quandary for myself, I will face both (b) and (c) albeit without ANY vouching of supportive family (having been ostracized for 'transitioning') or allies... and I love to travel by air... :( wait until a few years later... I will be challenged for being a BONAFIDE SENIOR... that will TREBLE my difficulties. do I really have to 'present' as 'old as my age'? (whatever would that really be?) all these ATTRIBUTES about myself are IRRELEVANT and PRIVATE... as long as I am who I am BY IMAGE and NAME ONLY, that is sufficient.

Wow, talk about backwards, uneducated, stereotypical white man mindset. It's really frustrating when someone like that is the face of the country I live in to the rest of the world. Patriarchal, andro and hetrocentric thinking that is so unenlightened. I am so sad he is the representative of our Country. Actually more embarassed :S. Uhm, get with the 80s even - hair bands and androgyny? Will he be authorizing the attendants confirming people's identity to grope people in unmentionable areas or order them to disrobe in order to confirm they are of the sex listed on their ID? Do I have to flash my tits to get on an airplane because I am tall, have short hair, and like baseball caps?

I am having trouble finding the regulation on the gc.ca website. Can the person who started this please provide a link to the government website so I can forward it/post it as proof? Thanks.
