Long-term reprieve and protection of historical site at 65 Carl Hall Road.

Goal : 12355 / 15000

On Tuesday September 20 2011 the Canadian Air & Space Museum was handed a notice of eviction by its landlords, the Crown Corporation Parc Downsview Park. The locks were immediately changed and the Museum was essentially closed with no notice. The building, which has been recognized as a Federal Heritage Building since May 14th 1992, is planned to be demolished and replaced with a four pad arena.

The Canadian Air & Space Museum is a non-profit organization that has been proud to host and showcase Canada's rich aviation history. It is not government funded and credits its creation and upkeep to hundreds of volunteers and thousands of volunteer hours. In addition to opening its doors to visitors, tours and special events, the Museum is part of the Toronto Board of Education's Grade 6 science and Grade 10 history curriculums -- hosting thousands of students each year.

The building at 65 Carl Hall Road, along with the artifacts it currently holds, needs to be protected. This petition asks that the building be granted a long-term reprieve and the protection of the Federal Government and that the Museum be granted the opportunity to continue its work in preserving the memory of Canada's place in aviation and aerospace history.

I for one want to thank you for your tireless effort to allow me to see and feel and touch a Canadian legend in the Avro Arrow. It's majesty on display for all to see. I hope we can stop this so I may show my young twin nephews what we can achieve when we work together.I was going to donate an Arrow pin from an A.V. Ro employee to this museum and I am sickened by the lack of respect and pride show by those who wish to destroy it. So typical of people to think of the almighty buck over a Country's pride. Shame on them. I'm signing this petition and will encourage others to do so. Thank you again.

I think that it is absolutely disgraceful that the Federal Government will give Heritage designation to various sites and then not do a single thing to protect them. They should be promoted, funded and publicized. Valuable Canadian history is being abandoned!

probably the next thing you will see at downsview will be a highrise. l remember it as a child and likely that will be all i get to remember.

David Romanko Sadly, that will turn out to be most likely with this Harper reign.

I so no reason why a government that destroyed the Arrow in the first place would not take another stab at it. Sometimes I'm embarassed to be a Canadian.

Al, our Arrow was an embarrassment to the US mfg's who still can't make one that beat our Arrow's specs and costs. Deif The Thief sold us out and our guys put the Yanks on the Moon, instead.

Patrick Forbes, you might be a little right, but in fact it was a "pissing contest" between Gorden and Diefenbaker. There has not been any evidence to show American involment in the demise of Avro, quite contrary to some beliefs, but in fact documentation does show the breakdown of relations between the two parties involved. Many other "Arrowheads" have also come to this conclusion after exhaustive study and the release of documents from the federal government after the "freedom of information" made it possible. As a side note,if you look @ the F 106,you will see a very strong resemblence of some of the design features that are in the Arrow.Keep in mind the F 106 was made first and was flying well before the Arrow.plus the Americans were @ the same time already designing the F 4 Phantom in 1958.

Hard to believe that the federal government funds the CBC with over a billion dollars a year yet gives nothing to support a major aviation heritage site.
27/12/11
Patrick Forbes
Believe me, they're trying to kill the CBC, too. Their vision of our CBC is not CBC's. Wait for it.....

This museum is a jewel. It has a rich history, fascinating aircraft, a dedicated staff of volunteers.....and people who hate the very concept of an Aviation Museum are intent on destroying it for their own selfish venture. If you REALLY want a skating rink in this area, why not build it nearby. For that matter, build it attached to the functioining museum. In Niagara Falls, New York, there is a shopping mall actually built onto the old Bell Aircraft factory which is now a museum. Just a thought...

Recently "RCAF" designation was given back to our airforce to recognize our place in history. This was gratefully appreciated by current and past members. Why then would they now turn their back on our Aviation and Space Museum? Makes no sense. Get with it Ottawa and save the museum!

Stevan Stojakovich Aviation in my Blood Canadian. The Toronto Region was and still is one of Canada's greatest Aviation engines, de Havilland Canada, National Steel Car, Victory Aircraft Ltd., Avro Canada, Orenda Engines Ltd, Spar Aerospace, Bombardier, McDonnell Douglas Canada, Boeing Toronto Ltd., Canadian Aeroplanes Ltd., and The Canadian Air & Space Museum represents all of these and more. I think our Veterans and the Men and Women who helped build Canada in aviation should be remembered in The Canadian Air & Space Museum at the Heritage Aviation Building it currently resides in (65 Carl Hall Road, Downsview). Not by a few pictures on a wall or a plaque at a hockey rink. Please write Our Heritage Minister, James.Moore@parl.gc.ca who did not even acknowledge this heritage site when questioned by Hon.Judy A. Sgro in Our Parliment. The Government just VERY recently erased all the literature at Parks Canada about the heritage buildings in CFB Downsview. Wow just like that no more heritage. Shame... OH and it belongs here not in Ottawa...

I can't believe that Toronto is even thinking of getting rid of this rich part of our history. Are they going to disallow the observing of Remembrance Day next? The museum contains not only the Arrow but many war planes that our military. Shame on you Toronto!

Patrick Forbes
Toronto has nothing to do with this. Harper does. Toronto is a bystander whose hands are tied as Toronto is a City beholden to the Province who is beholden to Ottawa. That is where the blame lies.

Dumb Dumb Dumb, Mr. Harper don't let this happen, this will be a major mistake.

It would be truly gratifying if Canadian bureaucrats would for once desist from hammering coffin nails into Canadian Aviation, past present and future, take the time to understand what these aircraft represent in terms of Canadian technical expertise and vision and support an enormously valuable asset. The Canadian Air and Space Museum is ideally placed to be a springboard for our children to enter the most rewarding career, at great benefit to themselves and to the country in which they live.

I have lots of amazing memories at this place. I was in air cadets as a teen. Every year my sqd. would make a trip here. It was always full of learning and fun. It will be a shame if it is closed.

Save the Museum and the Artifacts in it so that kids today can see the Aircraft that was used in the World Wars, etc. It would be just WRONG to destroy the museum. Why not build the arena where a condo is supposed to be built. There are way too many Condos. One less one wouldn't cause a problem.

It is imperative we preserve an important part of our heritage for future generations, so that they can understand the galliant effort and contribution that Canadians made to defeat the Nazis during WW11 and preserve our freedom and way of life.

For all the money that governments at all levels waste, it's a shame they cannot or will not find the money to support what is such an important part of our aviation & military heritage.DO THE RIGHT THING, make us proud as Canadians save the museum, if you don't save it all that will be left is the memories in the elderly & nothing for the future generation to enjoy & learn from.

Of course we should preserve our history... how ridiculous is the idea of shutting down an important part of that history. To shut it down would be to dishonour our veterans... I personally don't want to see that. We Canadians have a rich history, and as an immigrant, I can only say that I am just as proud as if I were born here. KEEP THE MUSEUM... I say. PROUD TO BE A CANADIAN!

My Great Uncle was one of the people who helped build the Arrow in the early 1960's. Because of the Government stopping production and destroying the plane he had to work til he was 75 to make enough money for he and my Aunt to live on. To this day I still think about how that decision affected their lives. My Uncle never said anything bad about what happened but I know how hard it was for him. Also was the fact that he fought for Canada in the First World War and was wounded. He had many phyiscal issues and the made his life even harder. He never complained and I a proud to be his Great Niece.

My Dad knew most of the Arrow Engineers. Some before Black Friday and many after they showed up in the States. A few personally. In his position, he wasn't permitted to discuss much of that time, even with me. Guess why.

That's the problem with the Canadian government they want nothing to do with Canada's past. With out the past Canada would be nothing so the question is if they take this part of Canada's history away what will be next we need to stand together to make sure fellow Canadians know where they come from and so they know when the time comes why we need to fight for the rest of Canada! Eh!

since the Diefenbaker era we have gone down hi in high gear The lose of the aero and 50 thousand jobs One of the best aircraft in the world gone the now Harper government wanting cuts here an there.anyone one with a mins time should be asking Harper what hes thinking. Billions spent on the G8 an 20 and cabinet ministers taking free rides , time they look at big picture.Time we as Canadians say enough is enough.

"The building, which has been recognized as a Federal Heritage Building since May 14th 1992..." has no standing whatsoever once the property was handed to a Crown Corp. They are immune from any such restrictions as to what they can or will do with or to 'their' assets. They could bloody well burn it all to the ground and sell it all for condos if they wish. They really are above all restrictions anyone can try to place upon them. Accountable to no one. Not unlike CBS at our borders or the RCMP for that maatter, while I'm at it.

My late mother and I both contributed my late father's aviation part of his business many years past. I would hat to see the Museum close down because of stupid Government Bills. Killing our space and aviation history, SHAME.

Best of luck with your campaign. This closure would be to deny Canada's great aviation heritage in favour of what? - a few more hockey rinks.
Who stands to make money out of this legalised vandalism?
