HUMANIZING THE SANCTIONS PLACED ON IRAN

We, the undersigned, deeply deplore certain excessively harmful effects of the recent Canadian sanctions placed on Iran, and demand that amendments be made to the Regulation Amending the Special Economic Measures (Iran) Regulations, which was implemented on the 21st of November, 2011.

The recent modifications prohibit all Canadians from providing “any financial services to… Iran or any person in Iran.” Despite the list of limited exceptions provided in the regulation, this all-encompassing prohibition has devastating consequences on Canadians, on certain sectors of the Canadian economy, as well as on the fundamental and inalienable rights of the Iranian civil population.

We remind the Canadian Government on the position of the United Nations’ Economic and Social Council’s position regarding economic sanctions:

“Lawlessness of one kind should not be met by lawlessness of another kind which pays no heed to the fundamental rights that underlie and give legitimacy to any such collective action.”
We urge that the Canadian government to recognize the need to Humanize the sanctions placed on Iran.

We urge that the Canadian government to recognize that there are over 300,000 Iranians living in Canada and that it is necessary that the country conform to its international obligations and provide additional exceptions to the regulation in order to avoid the devastating and misguided effects of the sanctions.
